The fungus attacks the vascular tissue of the tree and disrupts water and nutrient flow within the tree,  eventually causing branch dieback. The larvae of the beetles within the beetle galleria in infected trees feed on the fungus, forming a symbiotic relationship between the fungus and beetle.
